Start by creating a good filing system, both paper and electronic, says former wealth manager, Lottie Leefe, founder of The Dura Society, a platform and private client financial wellbeing consultancy. "Set up a new email address to use for all correspondence about the divorce or split and to forward relevant emails to," she says. "And set up electronic folders by category so you can organise emails and find things again easily as you go through the process."
“Make a list of all your assets and liabilities, and all sources of income in your relationship. Start to gather tax returns and financial statements including bank, investment and retirement accounts; and your mortgage, credit cards or any other debt,” says Lottie.

If you do succeed in getting more money, her top budgeting tip is to pretend that you didn’t. Divorce rates are spiking and it’s worth noting that courts increasingly recognise that a woman’s contribution to maintaining a home and raising children is as equal a contribution to the house as a man working in paid employment. Lottie Leefe, from the Dura Society, specialises in assisting divorcing parties (mostly women) through the process. “I have absolutely helped women who have instigated proceedings as they were unhappy with the division of labour,” she says. “I think there is an increasing awareness that these are valid grounds for divorce and women are becoming more empowered to take first steps towards this.”
